Mapping Complicated Surfaces onto a Sphere

چکیده
A method for mapping a closed, triangulated surface of genus 0 onto the unit sphere was developed using a parameterization based on spherical coordinates analogous to latitude and longitude combined with the Mercator scaling. The algorithm was tested on 77 protein and DNA surfaces and produces correct (bijective) mappings. The mappings produce relatively uniform distortion, as judged by angular criteria, and by distribution of octant areas, thus facilitating the graphical analysis of these surfaces.

Concept of Skeleton Texture Mapping
This article introduces an idea for novel way of mapping textures onto a surface of 3D model. Our technique is based on two interlocking mappings, the first one maps surface vertices onto computed skeleton and the second maps surrounding area of each skeleton segment into a rectangle with dimensions based on surface properties around this segment. Furthermore, these rectangles are packed into a...
متن کاملConformal Spherical Parametrization for High Genus Surfaces
Surface parameterization establishes bijective maps from a surface onto a topologically equivalent standard domain. It is well known that the spherical parameterization is limited to genus-zero surfaces. In this work, we design a new parameter domain, two-layered sphere, and present a framework for mapping high genus surfaces onto sphere. This setup allows us to transfer the existing applicatio...
متن کاملShape-Preserving Parametrization of Genus 0 Surfaces
The parametrization of 3-d meshes can be used in many fields of computer graphics. Mesh-texturing, mesh-retriangulation or 3-d morphing are only few applications for which a mesh parametrization is needed. Because, many polygonal surfaces are manifolds of genus 0 (topological equivalent to a sphere), we can apply a mapping, in which 2-d polar coordinates of a sphere can be directly transformed ...
متن کاملThe Uniformization of a Hyperbolic Riemann Surface
In this paper a hyperbolic Riemann surface is described, and the uniformizing function for this surface is constructed. The uniformizing function for this hyperbolic surface is an infinite product similar to the ones constructed for some parabolic surfaces in earlier studies [1], [2], [4]. Description of the surface. Let I denote the positive integers. For each iEI, let C, be the vertical line ...
متن کاملConformal Surface Parameterization for Texture Mapping
In this paper, we give an explicit method for mapping any simply connected surface onto the sphere in a manner which preserves angles. This technique relies on certain conformal mappings from differential geometry. Our method provides a new way to automatically assign texture coordinates to complex undulating surfaces. We demonstrate a finite element method that can be used to apply our mapping...
